The Nobel Prize
In 1906, Joseph John Thomson was awarded the Nobel prize for physics. He was given this award after his discovery of the electron in 1897. Also his other experimenting with the cathode ray, like electromagnetism, helped him win the award. The Nobel Prize is what could be called one of the most prestigious awards in the world. It is only given to the greatest minds, hardest working, and most dedicated men and women. The Nobel Prize truely helped J.J. Thomson make his mark on history.
The Royal Medal and The Hughes Medal
Thomson was awarded the Royal Medal in 1894. This award is given each year by the Royal Society to "the two most important developments in natural knowledge". Thomson was given this to his exceptional studies in mathematics and in physics, in particular to his studies in the electrical theory.
The Hughes Medal was awarded to J.J. in 1902. This is given by the Royal Society of London for original discoveries in physical science. Thompson was the first to recieve this award, and it is an honor to him. He was given this award for his contributions to electric science, specifically in the electrical discharge in gases.
Along to go with these fantastic awards, in 1908, Joseph John Thomson became Sir John Joseph Thomson as he was knighted by the Queen. As an Englishman, this is one of the most honorable things that can happen. He was a recipient of the Order of Merit.
The Copley Medal
The Copley Medal is an award given but the Royal Society of London for outstanding achievements in any branch of science. This is also the oldest award of the Royal Society of London. J.J. Thomson was recieved this in 1912 for his ground discoveries in physical science. He also became the President of this society from 1916-1920.
